What to Pack in Your Outdoor Bag

Whether it was for a school presentation, a job interview or a first date, we’ve all had moments when we were underprepared for what was to come. But nothing is worse than being unprepared for experiences in the great outdoors.

If you’re the rough-and-ready type, things that keep other people close to gas stations, fast-food chains and shopping malls are unlikely to have any hold on you. However, even you will enjoy your outings to the mountains and fields more if you come with the right things in tow. Here, we’ve outlined the packing essentials that you should always carry with you in your outdoor bag.

Water

This should be obvious—life is unsustainable without H2O. Tote a heavy-duty water bottle for breaks along the way, or choose a backpack with a water bladder in it so you can sip as you go.

Munchies

Don’t leave the house without a little fuel, even if you don’t think you’ll need it. Store granola bars and trail mix in the side pockets of your outdoor bag so that you can start nomming without even stopping.

First Aid

You probably don’t need a full kit and a defibrillator, but packing some bandaids, aspirin and antiseptic wipes is always a good idea. You can store them in the very bottom of your bag, as you hopefully won’t need them.

Cellphone

Even if you plan to be as unplugged as possible on your adventure, it’s still wise to have some way of contacting the outside world in case of an emergency. You can always turn your phone off and store it in a hidden pocket in your bag.

Weather Protection

Unless you’re going spelunking, consider packing sunglasses and sunscreen in your bag. You wouldn’t want being blinded or burned to a crisp to detract from you appreciating the glory of nature. Similarly, stowing a rain jacket in your bag will safeguard you against being unexpectedly drenched.

These essentials, while being important, are only the start of a truly prepared outdoor adventure. You can always add things to the list, from bug spray to matches and more. But don’t worry—with a trusty outdoor bag to pack it all in, you’ll be as ready as you can be.
