Three Simple Steps for Keeping Your Canvas Bag Clean

Unlike that luxe leather handbag you try to keep in pristine condition, you’re going to put your canvas bag through the wringer. That’s what it’s made for. You’ll tote it from the grocery store to a grassy park and everywhere in between, so it’s bound to get a stain or two. But don’t let a little dirt phase you—cleaning your canvas bag is as easy as 1, 2, 3.

1. Use a stain remover pen.

Canvas is a super strong, woven fabric, and it’s one of the easiest materials to clean. Get a little gunk on your canvas bag? Pat—don’t rub—it with a clean cloth to remove any residue. Then, grab a stain remover pen and use it accordingly. Wipe off any excess solution, and that’s that.

2. Wash it by hand.

For stains that aren’t so small or are a bit more set-in, you’ll want to hand-wash your bag in a sink. Gather your materials—mild soap or detergent and elbow grease—before filling your sink halfway with warm water. Add a teaspoon of soap, and scrub the affected area until the stain is gone. Lay it out or hang it up to dry overnight and it’ll look just as nice as it did the day you bought it.

3. Throw it in a washing machine.

If your bag is covered in serious stains, don’t worry: it’s still salvageable. Pre-treat the spots first with a cleaning solution. Flip it inside-out, then throw it in the washing machine either by itself or with like colors. To dry, you can toss it in the dryer on a low setting or let it air dry.

A heavy-duty canvas bag will always be there for you for better or worse. When it begins to look like the latter, taking care of it is easy.

The upkeep for these canvas bags is simple, just how it should be.
