’90s clothing: 4 reinvented classics

Techno, grunge, hip hop, and girl power: The ‘90s was a time of garish music and fashion. Baggy pants and platform shoes set the tone for a decade of loud, adventurous fashion statements. Let Stylight reveal how to create modern reinventions of classic ‘90s styles without missing a (fashion) beat:

1. Bootcut jeans

Bootcut jeans were a definite ‘90s favorite, their flared bottoms perfectly covering the tops of platform shoes and boots everywhere. Already a hallmark of ‘60s and ‘70s fashion, bootcut jeans relived a huge revival in the ‘90s and were most often combined with tight tank tops or fine-ribbed t-shirts.

The new look:
Ladies: Break out those old bootcut jeans and have fun combining them with slightly over-sized, loosely tucked-in cotton shirts. Creepers or platform sandals complete the look. Gentlemen: Bootcut pants look great in combination with rustic lumberjack shirts, a dark leather belt, and sneakers or leather boots.

2. Printed shirts

Printed shirts were all the rage in the ‘90s, especially within the techno scene. Favorites at Love Parades and the like included: Tops with provocative statements, shrill logos, and brightly colored neon motifs paired with flares or jean jackets.

The new look:
Nowadays, printed shirts for women look especially cool in combination with tight pants and lace-up ankle boots or leather sandals. Men can combine bright printed shirts with a sleek pair of skinny jeans or Chinos and leather sandals or sneakers.

3. Crop tops

Crop tops – preferably those with thin spaghetti straps – were everywhere in the ‘90s. These revealing tops allowed ladies to show off their flat tummies and cool new naval piercings.

The new look:
Today, crop tops are the super stylish companions of high-waist skirts or pants. Unlike its ‘90s counterpart, today’s style only reveals a small strip of skin just below the chest, making it compatible with elegant evening outfits.

4. Training jackets

You can’t picture the ‘90s without thinking of them: Training jackets… a favorite accessory in the world of hip hop and ideal for creating an all-over slacker look. And let’s not forget the most infamous combination: A training jacket in combination with button-up Adidas pants. Did someone say Good Will Hunting?

The new look:
In contrast to the style of the ‘90s, training jackets are now socially acceptable. Women can combine them with jeans or even their favorite little black dress. Men can feel confident sporting a training jacket combined with tight jeans and a color-coordinated shirt.

The cult clothing of the ‘90s can’t experience a true revival if not accompanied by the right soundtrack! Anyone who still has their old Walkman can break it out as a funny accessory to their ‘90s look; better yet, why not host a ‘90s-themed party set to top tracks from Nirvana, Backstreet Boys, and Boyz II Men!

The ‘90s are back: Bootcut jeans, printed shirts, and sexy crop tops are back in a big way with these modern looks!
