Stocking etiquette for women

Knee-highs, ankle socks, stockings… As you can see, stockings aren’t just stockings! And unlike men, who often lose little to no sleep over their choice of socks, women have the luxury of turning their hosiery into a sexy highlight! Stylight reveals how to avoid a serious stocking faux pas.

Fine pantyhose:

Runs in your stockings? Whether you’re more of an elegant business type or hardcore rocker chick, this is an absolute style NO-NO for all you ladies out there. And since runs can happen in the blink of an eye, here are a few helpful tips in advance: Always wear shoes or slippers when walking on wooden floors or uneven surfaces. Keep your toe nails and feet silky smooth (problem feet are better off in a pair of leggings!). Bunch each pantyhose leg together before pulling it on carefully, bit by bit. If you have rough hands, we recommend wearing gloves when putting on an extra sheer pair of pantyhose. First aid for hidden areas: Stop runs with a bit of clear nail polish.

Socks:

Socks can be worn on many occasions depending on the shoe. White sport socks are taboo in combination with dark loafers, especially at the office. Style experts can create extravagant leisure time outfits by mixing socks and shoes that don’t usually go together (think sandals with socks). The most important thing in any case is to choose socks that aren’t faded or full of holes. This helps avoid any embarrassing situations should you suddenly have to take off your shoes – which happens more often than you’d think! This is not an area in which you want to pinch pennies!

Thigh-high stockings and garters:

Whether they stay up on their own or are held with garter straps, thigh-high stockings have to match the outfit. The length of the skirt or dress is decisive in such cases; otherwise, you might find yourself sending the wrong signal. Tall women should go for a larger-than-usual size to ensure the stockings hit high enough on the leg.

Support stockings…

… are particularly good for long-distance flights, trade fair visits or any occasion that requires you to stand for longer periods of time. Luckily, modern designs are very discreet and nearly impossible to distinguish from normal stockings. However, an indisputable no-no is pairing support stockings with sandals, sneakers and Co. in combination with bare legs.

Darning guide for small holes: Purchase a darning egg and thread in the same color as the sock or stocking. Patch from left to right and poof! As good as new. However, this trick won’t work if your entire heel is already peeking through the bottom…
