Search For Precious Gems: Gemstone Jewelry

Welcome to Stylight’s mini course on Gemology, the study of gemstone jewelry. Light permeability, the degree of hardness, purity, and color are some of the criteria that make a gemstone expensive and precious. Take 60 seconds to learn about the three most popular gemstones that transform any piece of jewelry into a real treasure!

1. Ruby red

Ruby is a gemstone that belongs to the corundum minerals and can only carry the name ruby if it has the right color, meaning that it has to fall somewhere between pale red, blood red and dark red. The chromium in the ruby is what gives the gemstone its color. Rubies from Asian countries, such as Sri Lanka or Thailand, are traded at the Gemstone Exchange in Bangkok and are particularly popular. They are used as cabochons in jewelry, such as rings or pendants, or finished with a facet cut. Famous rubies include “The Mogok Sun” gemstone, which was found in 1993 and boasts an incredible weight of 1734 carats.

2. Sapphire blue

The word sapphire means “dear to planet Saturn”, no matter whether it is translated from Greek, Hebrew, or Sanskrit. Similarly to rubies, the sapphire belongs to the corundum minerals. It forms prismatic crystals. Iron and titanium give it its blue coloring. The melting temperature of the gemstone is 2040 degrees Celsius. The largest blue sapphire in the world (1404 carats!) was found in Sri Lanka and costs roughly $ 90 million. The visual star effect is created by deposited, aligned rutile needles, which generate this six-pointed, star-shaped reflection.

3. Emerald green

Even the ancient Egyptians back in 1300 B.C. were big fans of emeralds. Nowadays, the majority of these gemstones hail from Colombia. The estimated trade volume is $400 million a year, which is generated by the export of the gemstones from Colombia, where they are an important economic factor. Very bright green emeralds, however, come from Brazil and are popular in precious bracelets or cocktail rings.
