Dos and Don’ts of Doing Double Denim

Denim and more specifically Levi’s is probably what makes up the core of your closet—it’s your go-to whether you’re getting down and dirty outside or hanging out with the guys. A breathable cotton, woven into a sturdy twill, this durable denim has been the humble beginnings of your favorite outfits, so why not expand its infinite style to other parts of your outfits? Take for instance a casual denim shirt.

But just because you’ve expanded your denim to your top half doesn’t mean you have to ditch your jeans —or jackets. Follow our guide to navigating the double denim trend and wear your favorite fabric from head-to-toe.

Do Distressed: A denim shirt with jeans can feel stiff. Loosen up with distressed denim that will relax your look—so go ahead and get ripped.  

Don’t Get Lost in a Sea of Blue: Incorporate color to a indigo heavy outfit when you layer your chambray shirt over a white or otherwise bright tee that breaks up the blue.  

Do Mix Up Your Materials: All over denim done in the same weight and shade can make you look like you are wearing coveralls. Mix it up with darker jeans and lighter tops to make your pairing look more like an outfit and less like a uniform.

Don’t Restrict Your Double Denim to Just Jeans: Take part in the double denim trend without donning it from head-to-toe when you pair your denim shirt with a jean jacket instead of pants.

Do Dress Up your Denim: While double denim can’t go as far as formal, you can elevate it with a casual blazer and dress boots. Stick to its rustic roots when you choose a jacket in brown or tweed and sturdy, but sophisticated leather boots.

Do Go Beyond Blue: Denim on denim doesn’t have to mean just your basic blues. Dabble in the denim trend when you choose jeans or a shirt in a cotton twill in other colors, like black or green.
