The Lowdown on Pairing Socks with Low Shoes

A man who can master style gets many points in our books, but a man who can pair his low shoes with the right socks— he’s the real winner. Unless you’re wearing boots, it’s inevitable that you’re going to catch sight of your ankles— especially when wearing low-cut shoes. Standard tube socks do not suffice, at least stylishly so. When you’re wearing low shoes, don’t neglect the rest of your look, pick a pair of socks that honor them.

Keep your shoes looking fashionable and yourself looking cool with these socks and pairings. These simple suggestions will seriously improve your overall style.

Derby

When you opt for a dress shoe like a derby, your sock choice is even more important. If you’re wearing them to an office with a suit, select socks that are equally as formal. They should hit above your ankle, a few inches above the ankle bone. A derby shoe’s low cut and formal nature requires just the right sock, even if you’ll only catch a glimpse of them.  Also take color into consideration and go for a dark hue like navy or black.

Sneakers

The socks you wear with sneakers depends on a few factors. If you’re wearing them for athletic purposes or with shorts, then low-cut socks should always be worn with an ankle-grazing sneaker. However, if you’re wearing them with jeans then a higher hitting casual pair will work. Don’t be afraid to go for bolder colors or patterns with your socks when you’re off-duty.

Loafer

A casual slip-on loafer is thrown into this mix for one major reason: they should actually be worn sans socks. These relaxed shoes, from boat shoes to leather loafers cut below the ankle and show more of the footbed, so it’s pretty much impossible to wear even the lowest of socks with them— and you don’t really need a pair anyways. If your outfit and event are easygoing enough to wear loafers, you can go without socks.

The key to wearing low-cut shoes is finding the right sock to go with them. If you’re going to go low, you have to prepare for it.

Make sure to always pair the right socks, or no socks, with your low-cut shoes.
