Avoid the Perils of Low-Rise Jeans

The right pair of low-rise jeans should hug your body and flatter your curves, but it’s easy to get the fit wrong — too long, too loose with pockets hitting in the wrong places are all common gripes. Before shopping for low-rise denim, educate yourself on how to find your perfect fit.

When looking for well-fitting jeans, first comes first: measure yourself. Break out your measuring tape and find out the dimensions of your waist, hips and inseam. Write the figures down as you shop.

The Danger: Gapping at the Waistband

A gap at the waistband is a problem for many women when shopping for jeans. If you have curves, finding low-rise jeans that are narrow enough at the waist and roomy enough in the hips and thighs can be a challenge. Fix the issue by shopping with your measurements in mind, and keep an eye out for jeans that rise up slightly higher in the back than in the front.

The Danger: Unflattering at the Rear

An ill-fitting pair of jeans can result in the pockets hitting in all the wrong places. Your back pockets should be square and symmetrical in the middle of your derriere, and they should take up between 30 percent and 60 percent of of your rear’s surface area. Remember, smaller pockets make the area look bigger, and larger pockets make it look smaller.

The Danger: Revealing Too Much

The low rise of this jean makes it sexy, revealing just a little bit more of your torso than average, but some pairs go a bit too low. Avoid an embarrassing situation by looking at the listed length of the pant according to size compared to the inseam — if the difference between the inseam length and the pant length is less than 4 inches, you might want to keep shopping.

You want a pair of jeans that hugs your curves, but there’s a downside to that perfect fit: denim can be rigid and uncomfortable. Fix the issue by choosing a pair with a dose of spandex in the textile. The amount is up to you, but adding some stretch makes your jeans less binding and more supportive.

The Danger: Bunching legs

Wearing jeans that are too long leads to unflattering bunching around the calves. Avoid this by measuring your inseam and looking for a pair to match. Should you find a pair that you love that are too long, it’s an easy fix — a tailor can hem your denim for cheap.
