Mary Gui, the blogger behind Layers of Chic, is here to tell Stylight how she turned 300 Instagram followers into a community of more than 60,000 and who she turns to for blogging inspiration.
Hi Mary, tell us about yourself!
“I was born in China and moved to New York when I was seven. I’m 29 years old and work as a full-time fashion blogger at Layers of Chic.”
“I quit my job in advertising two years ago to pursue my career as a fashion blogger full time. When I quit, I only had 300 followers on Instagram and was not established whatsoever, but I’ve always loved fashion and believed that I could be successful in blogging with my unique outfits and point of view.”
I took a risk on myself and it was the best decision I’ve ever made.

“For makeup, I’m a hardcore Urban Decay and bareMinerals fan. I’m big on eyeshadow, colorful eyeliner, and a beautiful highlighter.”
What's your favourite beauty splurge?
My favourite beauty splurge is definitely eyelash extensions. I always feel like a new person after I get them as they instantly make my eyes look bigger; that, and it cuts my makeup routine in half!
If you were only allowed to own three beauty products, what would they be?
- A moisturizer with SPF
- A golden highlighter
- A fun lipstick

“I get my inspiration from vintage fashion and other style bloggers. My style icon is Blair Eadie of Atlantic-Pacific. She is the epitome of feminity and the way she puts outfits together is a work of art.”
