8 Fashion Mistakes That Make You Look Older
We don’t care what anyone says, if you can do something to avoid looking older, you’re damn well gonna try. Obviously the most effective anti-ager is sleep, but the second, is fashion. Yes, fashion can add or subtract years, and there’s a few key styles that, through no fault of their own, instantly make you look older. These poor outfit choices have the unfortunate ability of amping up the granny factor, and not in the cool way. What are these fashion mistakes that make you look older? Well…
1. Twinsets
Whichever was you spin it, the twinset can only be coolified so much. Its strong ties to retirees has made it inextricably linked to sassy septuagenarians. Soz, luv.
2. All-beige ensembles
The only way you can possibly make the all-beige look remotely age-appropriate is by doing a Kardashian and wearing it in skin-tight form. But this we don’t advise because, well, beige leggings and beige bandage dresses? Nah, no one suits those – not even a Kardashian.
3. Square toe shoes
Céline might have played a significant role in the square toe shoe’s revival, but cult French designer aside, the shoe toe shape is notoriously worn by grannies and anyone who’s more concerned with their podiatry health than style. Admit it; if you didn’t know those god-awful square toe shoes were by Céline, you wouldn’t want them.
4. Pearls
Pearls are super tricky to pull off because they instantly connote WASPy country club ladies. Decoded: make you look older. If you’re going to venture down the pearly path, contrast them with edgy designs such as band t-shirts, leather, anything grungy.
5. Boxy jackets
These are the least likely to add age if you style them right. Like pearls, the key here is avoiding any fuddy-duddy separates and opting for form-fitting skirts/dresses/trousers to contrast, or loose and/or distressed boyfriend jeans to show just how much you DGAF.
6. Dresses over leggings
Just don’t do it. That is all.
7. Nude tights
These never work in anyone’s favour. If you’re wearing them during summer, we ask you, Why? If you’re wearing them in winter, again, we ask you, Why? What’s wrong with black tights? Or some over-the-knee cable knit socks? Your heels/boots’ coolness is at stake!
8. Orthopaedic shoes
As with Number 3, any item of clothing or accessory that prioritises your health over hotness will make you look older, guaranteed. There’s comfort, and then there’s comfort dressing. Know the difference!
