Clothing Hacks That Changed Our Lives
It’s probably fair to say we’ve all done a Vivian in Pretty Woman, Sharpie-ing our scuffed leather shoes to make them last. We’ve also had other classic Julie Roberts movie moments, spilling drinks down our shirts à la Notting Hill and splitting seams like character Jules in My Best Friend’s Wedding. Life is plagued with endless opportunities to be a gooseberry, and its our poor clothes that suffer the most.
How to redeem our clumsy actions? These mind-blowing clothing hacks should do it.

- Remove sweat stains by spray lemon juice onto the affected area and then put the piece of clothing in the wash.
- De-pill your clothing with a razor and catch any leftovers with a strip of tape you’ve wrapped over itself.
- Iron collars with a hair straightener.
- Remove makeup stains around the neck by rubbing shaving cream over them and then popping them in the wash.
- Stop zips from opening by reef knotting an elastic band through your the zip and looping the free end around your the garment’s button.
- Buy trousers without trying them on: If you wrap the waistband around your neck and the side seams meet neatly the trousers will fit perfectly. The greater the overlap, the looser they’ll be, and vice versa; a gap between side seams (so you see your neck) means they’ll be too tight.
- Remove static from woollen clothing by rubbing a small amount of moisturiser on it. Alternatively, freeze it for a few hours pre-wear.
- Clean suede with stale bread crusts.
- Shine patent leather with Windex.
- Lubricate jammed zipper teeth with graphite pencils.
- And our favourite: Remove red wine stains with white wine. True story.
