How do you become a VSCO girl? Well, as a 25-year-old without a TikTok account, I’ll be the first to admit that some Googling was involved. VSCO girls, or “the Tumblr girls of 2019” as Urban Dictionary so aptly defines them, are a flock of Hydroflask-happy Gen-Zers taking over the Internet.
The term VSCO girl comes from the photo-editing app VSCO. With 75 percent of its user base under the age of 25, Gen-Zers are using the app to perfectly filter the aesthetic and subculture that’s defining their generation.
So what are the ingredients of a VSCO girl? Well, first off, they’re “basic” and happy to be so. Once an attribute considered so crass we would storm off with our oat milk pumpkin spice lattes; the basic VSCO girl enjoys the fundamentals of a VSCO “starter pack.” Likely containing any number of Pura Vida bracelets, puka shell necklaces, oversized t-shirts and Ultracor leggings, the VSCO girl is singlehandedly saving the scrunchie industry in her Fjällräven backpack.
