Liu Yifei, the actress playing Mulan in Disney’s 2020 adaptation of the cult-classic film, beat out nearly 1000 other actresses for her role in the highly-anticipated remake.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney casting directors took their search across five continents to find a leading lady who had credible martial arts and English skills alongside star-quality acting chops.
The 31-year-old Chinese-American actress, who has been nicknamed “Fairy Sister” by the Chinese public, is one of the country’s most popular actresses.
After moving to the United States at age 10 with her mother, Liu Yifei returned to China in 2002 to pursue her acting career. Alongside scoring roles in dozens of popular Chinese films, Yifei acted in the English films The Forbidden Kingdom, alongside Jackie Chan, and Outcast, opposite Nicolas Cage and Hayden Christensen.
