6 items that a fashion editor wears on repeat
As a fashion editor, it’s hard to not get influenced by the latest trends and styles – after all it’s part of our job to see what the hype is all about right? But after trying (and buying) so many different pieces, there are certain items that I will always reach for – my tried and true fashion staples, the pieces that I can easily combine, and the items that I know will look good when I’m too lazy to think about a cool outfit.
If you want to cut through all the micro-trends and fast fashion and find the pieces that will pass the test of time, here are 6 fashion staples that a fashion editor swears by.
1. Biker jacket
So what does a fashion editor wear? There’s a pretty high chance that an oversized, leather biker jacket will be in their closet. Not only is it a functional piece of clothing it can accommodate a wide range of styles and outfits.
My biker jacket is often my first choice when I head out – since it goes well with all my outfits. Moto not your style? You can always go for a tighter, more tailored leather jacket.
Outfit ideas:
- Biker jacket with a mini skirt and knee-high boots
- Biker jacket with a silk/satin slip dress and kitten heels
- Biker jacket with a graphic t-shirt and a midi skirt

A fashion editor’s go-to pair of jeans? You can’t go wrong with a pair of laid-back, loose-fitting jeans. Take it from British Vogue’s fashion director, Julia Sarr-Jamois, and invest in a pair of jeans that will go with everything and will have you reaching for them again and again.
A fashion editor falls in love with pieces that can be easily combined across different aesthetics, seasons, and moods. A slightly baggy, but tailored jean will allow you to be both trendy and versatile.
Outfit ideas:
- Go for a “Blokecore-look” and wear them with a soccer jersey and a blazer.
- Pair them with a strappy summer top and sandals in summer
- Combine them with a pair of ballet flats and a linen vest

Want to dress like a fashion editor? A fashion editor knows a thing or two about accessories – from chunky belts, to crochet bucket hats, we’ve seen it all. But which are the ones that we keep coming back to – and actually want to wear over and over again?
For me, it’s tinted sunglassses. It’s a trend that’s been around since the 60’s and 70’s, but it’s more recently gained popularity again this year. They are a great way to liven up my outfits and can easily give a basic outfit a little extra “oomph”. Not only are you protecting your eyes against UV rays, you’re looking cool while doing it.
Outfit ideas:
- Embrace your inner hippie with some chunky jewelry and boot-cut jeans
- Channel the “weird-girl” aesthetic and combine them with a lace skirt and a quirky baby-tee

Yes, it’s basic. But that’s what makes it the perfect fashion staple. If you’re like me, and like to be experimental in your style, the white tank top is great item to have in your fashion arsenal. You need a few basics, so the “statement pieces” have a place to shine. Or if you’re into layering, a white tank is a great foundation or starting point for a cool outfit.
Outfit ideas:
- Wear it with a bold, printed skirt like Vogue fashion editor, Naomi Elizée.
- Style your tank top underneath a silky, slip dress
- Wear a pair of flowy, linen pants with your tank top for a laid back, Scandi-vibe.

5. A silk scarf
The silk scarf is one of the most versatile accessories in a fashion editor’s closet. There are so many ways you can wear it! It’s usually one of the first things I pack on a vacation and during the summer months I usually keep one tied to my bag, just in case.
Outfit ideas:
- Wear it as a headscarf to keep your hair out of your face on a windy day
- Wear it around your neck to keep your neck warm on a breezy, summer night
- Tie it to your bag for some extra color
- Wear it as a cute, strapless top at the beach!

A fashion editor’s favorite shoe? The piece of footwear that gets the most wear and tear in my closet are no doubt my mid-calf leather boots. I, myself, am personally partial to a good cowboy or biker boot, but if that’s not your thing, there are wide range of styles that fit to this category. Why are these the ultimate go-to shoe? They look good with everything! Simple as that. I can wear them almost all year long, rain or shine.
Outfit ideas:
- Biker boots, a pair of bermuda shorts, and a tank top
- Cowboy boots, Adidas track shorts, and a white linen shirt
- Mid-calf boots with a kitten heel, midi skirt, and a graphic t-shirt
