What To Wear To The Ballet & Opera
With a whole new season of shows hitting theatres in time for the summer, we recently encountered the conundrum of: What the heck do you actually wear to them? If you’re going to the ballet or the opera, the dress code is far less clear than if you were to say, check out a Broadway play or go to a gig in London. TV and movies are hardly reliable sources, because they’re usually dramatised and exaggerated (but why wouldn’t they be? It’s an excellent excuse for an extravagant ball gown moment). Nevertheless deciding your outfit if you’ve never been to the ballet before is a challenging feat.
Are you meant to go not quite red carpet-worthy but still cocktail dress-y? Should you just got smart-casz? What’s the deal? Well, the unspoken understanding is that if you’re attending the premiere or big opening night of an opera or ballet and there’s an invite, it’s a go-big-or-go-home situation. But if you’ve bought a ticket and it’s not some special, organised function, definitely go with smart-casz, like the way you would if you were attending a job interview. Or an anniversary dinner.
We’ve compiled a couple of looks for you to get your inspiration and look fabulous in while you’re having a marvellous time, you culture vulture, you.
