When to wear mirrored sunglasses – and when not to

Colourful mirrored sunglasses are the trend of the Summer. They’re just as much a part of the Summer season as a cold ice cream or a pair of flip-flops. However, mirrored sunglasses have one disadvantage: people can’t look you in the eye during conversation. We reveal which occasions allow you to show off your stylish sunglasses, and when you’d be better of leaving them at home. A brief guide to sunglasses etiquette.

At the office

We know that it’s difficult for you to part with your round sunglasses with pink-tinted shades, but just like hats or caps, you should take off your mirrored sunglasses at work. Even in 40 degree heat, this fashionable accessory has no place in the office. If you encounter your boss whilst wearing sunglasses, it could give the impression that you have something to hide.

In the club

It’s a similar story when spending a night on the town with your friends. In beer gardens or at music festivals your mirrored sunglasses are obviously essential. But later on when the sun goes down, your favourite pair of wayfarers should disappear too. Only posers still wear sunglasses when dancing in the club. The only exception: if it’s a theme party, your glasses can stay on!

During conversation

If you’re out and about in burning sunshine and stop for a little chat due to a chance meeting on the street, or if you’re sitting on a café terrace, you have good reason to leave your sunglasses on. If you have sensitive eyes, you’re also allowed to protect your vision when speaking to other people – provided that your companion understands your reasons. However, if you’re just wearing your cat-eye sunglasses as a cute accessory with your trendy summer dress, then you should always take them off during conversation.

In photos

For holiday photos or selfies, mirrored sunglasses are of course allowed – they belong in the photos just as much as bikinis or swim trunks. But if you’re taking a serious photo for a job application, your eyes should always be visible.

Which sunglasses are most suitable for your face shape? The rule of thumb: the shape of your sunglasses shouldn’t be too similar to the shape of your face – instead, the two should contrast. So if you have a round face, square or angular sunglasses are perfect. This will give your face more shaping. Mirrored sunglasses with oval or round lenses are especially flattering for heart-shaped faces. People with oval faces are the lucky ones, as they can wear all types of sunglasses.

With a pair of mirrored sunglasses you’ll always see things clearly.
