Take Care: Ways to Maintain Your Quilted Coat

As the cold weather blows through—accompanied by snow and high winds—your stylish quilted coat is going to go through a lot. From white salt stains to  possible tears, it may end up with a few battle wounds by the time the cool temperatures begin to warm up. To ensure it looks just as chic as the first day you put it on, you need to give your coat the right care.

Though they’re not as high-maintenance as a fur or cashmere coat, quilted styles still need adequate preservation so they stay fresh and durable. Here’s how you do it:

Sufficient Storage

Quilted coats acquire their puffiness from the feathers stuffed inside them. While rolling it up may seem like a great way to save space in your closet or to pack for a weekend trip, you’ll actually do more damage than good. By rolling it up or folding it, you crush the feathers and reduce the coat’s puffy shape and warmth. Make sure you always hang it up on a hanger so your quilted coat isn’t crushed.

Surface Cleaning

The best way to clean off your quilted jacket and to keep it smelling clean is to handwash it. Gently scrub the surface with detergent and rinse accordingly. To dry, put your quilted coat in the dryer on the lowest setting. They take a long time to dry, so be patient as it restores itself to its former puffiness.

Patching Up

When wearing your quilted coat in outdoor environments, you’re bound to deal with rips and tears. This will inevitably cause you to lose a few feathers. Instead of tossing it out, send it to the tailor to get it patched up. Or, for an at home remedy, opt for nylon fabric repair tape that will seal the tear and prevent any further ripping.

Zipper Maintenance

The zipper is often neglected on coats. After multiple times of zipping up and down, you may find that it becomes stubborn or just stops zipping all together. To avoid these conundrums, spritz your zipper with a silicone spray. Washing with soap and water also improves the function of your zipper.

For a quilted coat that’s always spick and span, follow these tips and give it the adequate care it needs. Not only will your coat last longer, it will be ready for all of the cold’s most frightening weather.

Make your quilted coat last with adequate cleaning and maintenance.
