Raincoats for women: 3 designs and how to style them

Probably the most famous raincoat is the typical beige trench coat, which was originally made by Burberry for the British military. It quickly gained widespread popularity and is now a trademark of the label. But there are also other stylish raincoats for women who want to shield themselves against the cold and damp. We present three designs and the outfits to wear with them so the weather won’t rain on your parade.

1.    The rain parka…

…is a lot lighter than a standard parka and is made from water-resistant material. It is usually cut very straight and stops around your knees. Elastic cord pulls can be attached at the waist or hips. The hood and a large stand up collar keep the water away from your neck. Lots of bright colors like yellow, orange or red provide a great contrast to miserable rainy weather.

Wear it with: Slim jeans, thick leggings in dark colors, an oversized sweater with a plaited cord, a long t shirt layered with a cropped sweater, bright rubber boots and a woolly hat.

2.    False trench:

Normally trench coats have lots of features and details. But with false trenches the idea is to have a classic cut coat, which is nonetheless made from the same material – gabardine – and comes in a range of similar beige colors. It has an ordinary collar (no hood) and can be buttoned up with a covered button bar.

Wear it with: Black or marine chinos, college style mini skirts, baseball shirts, single color cashmere sweaters, turtleneck shirts, slim jackets with low shoulders, Chelsea boots or brogue ankle boots and silver accessories.

3.    Oilskin coats:

The original oilskin coat is bright yellow and cut like a classic jacket. Much more elegant than that are the coats made from the same material, but which shine in colors like black, white, pink, red and blue. They usually have a large hood and can be lined beautifully on the inside. They are worn a little looser to give you more space for elaborate styling underneath.

Wear it with: Slim cloth pants, classic pencil skirts, denim mini skirts, sweatshirts and hoodies, loose knit sweaters, animal pattern cardigans, plaid woolen scarves or soft jersey shawls, flat boots or creepers with treaded soles.

Raincoats should have good quality material, to make sure you stay completely dry underneath. Water-resistant materials are especially good for this. It doesn’t always have to be synthetic either, even layered cotton can be great for keeping the rain off.
