Denim Days: Denim shoes through history

1873 went down in the history books for all fashion-lovers, as it was in this year that father of blue jeans, Levi Strauss, created the first denim trouser. Nowadays the sturdy cotton fabric is not only used to make trousers, but purses, jackets, and shoes as well. Stylight shows you how jeans have changed over time, and which denim shoes fit each era:

Martens Revolution

The remaining denim stock from the army was recycled in the 50s as a symbol of protest. Often denim jackets were doused with beer or covered in mud, then they were no longer washed. You probably don’t have to go quite that far, but if you too have an inner-rebel, you can show it off with this fashionable solution – Denim shoes are among the products made by the well-known brand Doc Martens: the “Eye Brogue” in a faded denim design is one example. For the perfect fashion statement, wear the distinctive wing-tip brogue with a polka-dot petticoat.

Platform Power

Around 20 years later, jeans were established as an everyday item of clothing. Teenagers, hippies and older people too loved the flared trousers in particular. The available colour and style options offered by the cult-clothing item became larger and more unusual by the day. If you want to do justice to the wild seventies, the denim platform pumps by Marc Jacobs are a good choice The ankle straps look dainty and elegant, whilst the sequins and pearl details lend a bit of glamour to the denim shoe.

Sk8ter Boy

The fact that skateboarding can hurt is something that you have to learn the hard way. It was for exactly this reason that baggy jeans were invented in the 90s, as a possible solution to the pain. The wide fit made it possible to wear protective padding under your pants. To revive the laid-back skater look, you’d be best wearing denim trainers like the ones made by the Djinns label. The bright denim shoes look casual and make you the number one “Sk8ter Boy” or girl.

Needless to say, the number of different denim washes is just as big for denim shoes as it is for jeans. Moon-washed, bleached or authentic are just some of the many styles.

Denim shoes pay homage to classic jeans.
