The Short Directive: The Rules and Regulations of Rocking Short Pants

We’ll make it short and sweet—when it comes to wearing  shorts, there are some rules that cannot be broken. You wouldn’t think that cropping pants to the knee would make such a difference in how, where and when bottoms are appropriate, but shorts tell a completely different story than the average pair of pants. Inherently casual and all about fit, shorts should be worn with caution.

Take these commandments to your closet so when you don a pair of shorts, you’ll be sure that you’re wearing them well.

  1. It’s all about the length. For almost every style of shorts, excluding running and athletic pairs, shorts should hit just above the knee. Any longer, and you’re approaching jort territory. Any shorter should be reserved for water-related activities.
  2. Occasion makes a difference, not only in whether or not they’re appropriate to wear but also what styles are most suitable. Unless your office dress code leans seriously towards creative, shorts come off as way too casual. The same applies to events where formal attire is required. Otherwise, your average warm weather day has a place for shorts. Denim shorts look more relaxed, whereas chinos dress up the cropped silhouette.
  3. Shorts for athletic activities are always fitting, especially if it’s hot outside. Just make sure to pick a fabric that is lightweight and breathable. Heavy cargos will slow down your work out and cramp your gym style.
  4. Styling shorts may be their trickiest aspect. Their easygoing nature calls for clothes that are equally laidback. That’s not to say that a button-down or blazer can’t be paired with a crisp pair of chinos, but the addition of a silk tie would go overboard. Easy go-tos include T-shirts, lightweight sweaters and sneakers.

Don’t get the short end of the style stick when you try to wear your shorter pant styles. Follow these regulations to come out on the better end.
