Beat the Heat in Summer Pants

Summer pants— they’re not an oxymoron, but they seem a little off. You may think it’s too hot to pull off a pant in a season of sunshine. Seek out certain qualities, though, and you’ll find that your summertime look can include bottoms beyond shorts and skirts.

Here’s how to pick out a pair that’ll keep you cool and comfortable.

Material

Synthetics are not your friend when it’s muggy outside. Avoid fabrics that become sticky with sweat and opt for natural fibers. Pay attention to labels that ensure your pants are 100-percent cotton, a fabric that breathes and wears well in the heat. Go lighter with linen or linen-blend pants that’ll keep you cool.

Fit

Too-tight bottoms are never comfortable, but in the heat they’re even worse. You don’t have to give up a well-fitting pant though— loose doesn’t mean baggy. Look for something that skims your skin and lightly hangs off your body. When a breeze heads your way, you’ll be thankful.

Color

Dark hues absorb more sun and make you hotter. If you insist on sticking to neutrals, go with gray, white or tan to reflect rays. If you aren’t afraid of color, light blue, yellow or green will liven up—without heating up—your bottom half.

Silhouette

Women, step into warm weather in wide-legged pants that move with you and go well with platform strappy sandals. Ankle-grazing pants are a more practical and professional option for work. Men, stray from a slim-fit jean that hugs you and go for a regular-cut pant that’s slightly looser.

Get in the groove of sunny seasons with relaxed pants that better your warm weather repertoire.
