DIY Techniques to Freshen Up a White T-Shirt

A basic white T-shirt is a staple piece in every closet. It matches with practically everything, it’s comfortable and easy. But sometimes the most simple pieces need a fresh spin. With a white T-shirt, all it takes is a few scissors snips to create a completely creative and new piece.

Try your hands at simplified DIY techniques to revive a white tee.

Crop and Knot

Get in with the crop top movement with your own do-it-yourself twist. Take a standard tee— crew or V-neck, put it on, and with a pen, mark the point where you’d want to cut around. A few inches below the natural waistline is recommended for the best shape. Remove the shirt and steadily cut from that mark all the way around the shirt. Then cut a line about three inches up the middle of the shirt  to create two strips you can tie together. Voila, a crop-and-knot tee you made all on your own.

Cut-Out Top

Pick a fitted thick jersey tee to start, as this technique looks best on a tighter top and higher quality fabric will keep it from fraying in the wash. Turn the shirt inside out and use chalk to draw a geometric pattern of your choosing— a ruler can help measure precise cut-outs. Then, carefully cut around the shapes you created. Flip it around and you’re done.

Edgy Mullet Tank

Turn your tee into a tank top with easy cuts and snips that will take you less than five minutes. Lay the shirt flat in front of you with the sleeves folded out and cut them off. Create a lower neckline and trim off the collar according to how low you want the shirt to go. Then, cut a few inches straight off the front of the shirt to create a high-low silhouette. Now your white T-shirt is a breezy tank.

There’s something satisfying about making your own stylish clothes out of something ordinary. Soon enough, you’ll be the DIY master.
