Kicks in Crisis: How to Clean Your White Nikes

The feeling you get upon opening a box of fresh white Nikes is nothing short of thrilling. You begin thinking of all the outfits you can wear your snow-colored shoes with and how polished you’ll look. However, the next thing that comes to your mind are the dark blemishes that may end up on your all-white kicks.

Avoiding dirt is nearly impossible when wearing your white Nikes outside the house, but keeping them clean isn’t. Here are a few ways to handle even the worst case scenarios.

You Walk Around in a Busy City

Whenever you walk around in an overpopulated city, there are certain areas that are bound to be filled with dirt and trash. As you walk through it all in your white Nikes, they may not come out as bright.  When they’re covered in scuffs, if you leave them unclean, those few brown spots may darken the entire sneaker over time. Handle the few dots you do see with a sponge dipped in house soap and water. Rub it over your shoes and they’ll be just like new.

Someone Steps on Your Nikes

It happens to all of us. You’re standing in a crowded area and all of a sudden, someone steps on your shoes. While you may quickly forgive the stranger after they apologize, the story changes when it comes to your white Nikes. You may not find too much damage on a dark shoe, but the track mark of the stranger’s footwear gets left on your light Nikes. When this happens, it’s time to break out an old toothbrush. Combining equal parts water and baking soda, make a paste and scrub it over your white Nikes to get rid of the dirt and debris.

You Step in Mud—or Worse

A little dirt on your white Nikes is one thing, but having half of your shoe covered in dark brown mud is a level 10 sneaker emergency. Your first instinct may be to chuck the sneakers in the trash, but your muck-covered kicks can be saved. The first step in restoring your white Nikes is to wipe off excess dirt with the a wet cloth. Once you are down to nothing but sneaker, lightly scrub with a  fresh damp cloth and detergent until they’re as white as possible. The last thing you can do is resort back to your toothbrush and baking soda mixture and scrub down the still-dirty nooks and crannies of your white shoes.

A little dust on your white Nikes won’t ruin them for good. Clean them accordingly and they’ll be back to their bright hue.

For a white Nike that is always vibrant, give them the care they deserve.
